DIY Teeth Whitening – What You Should Know

DIY whitening is crazy. Not because the random techniques from brushing with charcoal to baking soda are bad or ineffective, but because proven, effective, easy, sanitary and comfortable tooth whitening products are so cheap or even free these days! Why do something experimental when you can have proven products for less or even free?

Crest White Strips were my product of choice when I decided to whiten my teeth. They cost less than $30 and are incredibly easy to use and wear while delivering amazing results. I resisted whitening for decades even though I’m a dentist but I was very pleased with the results! It’s been a few years since I’ve used White Strips so as I write this I’m thinking it’s probably time to do it again. Whitening is not a one time thing but will need to be repeated every now and again depending on how much staining food and drink you are partial to.

Another fantastic whitening option that is far superior to experimental DIY whitening is to get free, professional, custom made whitening trays from Arkansas Dentistry & Braces. How is this possible you ask? Simple, just call or contact us for a no obligation visit or exam, mention that you read about DIY whitening and our free whitening offer and we will be happy to make models of your teeth and use those to fabricate custom whitening trays. We will also give you a supply of bleach for free. You can’t beat the quality or the price and all you have to do is know where to go to get yours.

Again, there is nothing wrong with doing DIY tooth whitening but why would you when you can get it done professionally so much easier and for free?

Below are some safe DIY options for those of you who are bound and determined to do it at home!

My Child Knocked A Tooth Out – What Do I Do?

shutterstock_207987484

It happens. Trampolines, bicycles, scooters, stairs, baseball bats, tennis racquets, elbows, playgrounds, brothers and sisters all can play their part in damaging or even knocking teeth out. As parents, few things scare us more than a bleeding little face and a tooth in our hands, but we must keep our heads and follow very specific steps when and if our child has an accident to maximize our chances of saving the tooth and the child’s smile. If it is a baby tooth that is damaged, we have less to worry about but we should still address the problem with a dentist because baby teeth are important! If an adult tooth is damaged or knocked out then we should visit this website and decide which description most closely matches the damage to our child’s mouth and then follow the instructions on how to address the problem.

Why should parents know about this website? Well, honestly, emergency room doctors know very little about teeth and how to deal with dental trauma and even dentists can be a bit rusty on the fine points of how to maximize our chances of saving a tooth so it’s a great idea for you to have this website handy.

We all hope that our kids won’t have damage to their teeth but if it does happen we want to be prepared!

Watch the Right Way to Brush

You probably think you know how to brush your teeth correctly. After all, how hard could it be? Glob some toothpaste on the brush, move it around a few times in your mouth, and you’re done. You’ve been doing it since you were a little kid.

Well, brushing your teeth isn’t hard, but that doesn’t mean you’re doing it in a way that promotes optimum oral health. Let Dr. Burris and his son William show you how it’s done.

Some key tips:

  • Brush two to three times a day
  • Keep the brush half on the teeth and half along the gum line
  • Massage the gums all the way around the mouth
  • Work around in the backsides of teeth, too
  • Move the tongue out of the way to get between the tongue and the back of the teeth

Baby Teeth Are Important!

I think we all tend to take baby teeth for granted. They are just there for a few years and then they fall out so we don’t take them too seriously, but baby teeth are incredibly important for many reasons.

It’s vital that you take your child to see a dentist by age 1. By doing this, you can learn from your dentist and hygienist the best way to care for your baby’s teeth, start her off on the right foot, get her used to seeing the dentist and make sure we avoid big problems that can lead to traumatic dental visits later on. Seeing your dentist and hygienist every 6 months after that is a great way to prevent problems and reinforce good habits.

As an orthodontist at Arkansas Dentistry & Braces, I look at baby teeth as the space maintainers for adult teeth. Their job is to hold space for the adult teeth that follow them. Basically they are saving a seat for their big brothers and sisters. If baby teeth are lost too early because of cavities or trauma, then the space they are saving can close up and cause big problems for the adult teeth – sometimes the adult teeth are even prevented from coming in! It is extremely important to maintain the space when baby teeth are lost early. The good news is that it’s very easy to do if you catch the problem in time.

Taking your child to see your dentist and hygienist early and often is the best way to prevent damage or loss to baby teeth and to make sure space is maintained if there are problems. Seeing an orthodontist by age 6 or 7 is the best way to make sure the baby teeth are doing what they are supposed to and that the adult teeth are coming along well. It is rare these days for a child to receive orthodontic treatment early but we orthodontists are very keen to observe and manage baby teeth and the eruption of the adult teeth in the hopes that the adult teeth come in as straight as possible so we can avoid adult tooth removal. Sometimes we can even avoid braces altogether.– Ben Burris, DDS, MDS
